# Portioned

> Portioned is a restaurant bookkeeping tool with a chat-first interface. Restaurant owners ask questions in plain English and get specific answers about their finances — food cost, labor, prime cost, invoice history, and more. It works alongside QuickBooks (not instead of it) and files everything to the owner's Dropbox.

## Core Positioning

- **Chat-first:** Instead of navigating reports, owners ask questions and get answers. "How's food cost looking?" returns a specific answer with context, not a dashboard.
- **QuickBooks co-pilot:** Portioned handles daily restaurant ops. At month-end, it feeds clean organized data to QuickBooks. The accountant's workflow doesn't change.
- **Dropbox filing cabinet:** Every invoice, receipt, statement, and export is filed to the owner's own Dropbox — organized by year and month. Files are always findable, even years later, even if they stop using Portioned. No vendor lock-in.
- **Universal upload:** Drop a PDF, snap a photo, forward an email — Portioned figures out what it is, reads it, categorizes it, and files it automatically.
- **Mobile-first PWA:** Add to iPhone home screen, works like a native app. Push notifications for cost alerts.

## What Portioned Does

Portioned solves the gap between a restaurant's daily financial reality and the tools available to understand it. QuickBooks has 200 reports — none of them answer the questions a restaurant owner actually has at 11pm.

**Data sources supported:**
- Toast POS — daily sales, payout CSVs, POS sync
- American Express (AMEX) — credit card transaction CSVs
- Chase — credit card transaction CSVs
- Stripe — balance summary exports
- ADP — payroll exports (Excel/CSV)
- Fintech / beverage distributors — invoice CSVs with line-item detail
- PDF invoices — OCR extraction of vendor invoices
- QuickBooks — import and export

**Core workflow:**
1. Import from any source (CSV, PDF, photo, forwarded email)
2. Portioned detects duplicates automatically
3. Transactions are auto-categorized using AI and smart rules
4. Ask questions in chat — get specific answers about your restaurant
5. At month-end, export clean data to QuickBooks
